Having recently come back from his trip to Ukraine, Professor Zbigniew Wojnowski kindly agreed to share his impression of the local political dynamics that he witnessed during his trip as well as to discuss his to-be-published article about the relevance of the Crimean history based on his findings at the local archives.

You are cordially invited to a panel discussion «Unfolding The Devaluation: Three Dimensional Perspective» organized by NU Association of Political Science Students.
Wondering why did the Devaluation happen? Was it inevitable? If yes, did there exist any better way of implementing it?
These and other questions will be explored by three SHSS professors - economist Dr. Hongru Zhang, political scientist Dr. Jee Park and historian Dr. Steven Wheatcroft. Each professor is going to provide his own view of the recent devaluation of tenge from the perspective of their field of study.

"Soliders of the Caliphate: Myths and reality"

Erlan Karin is a Kazakh political scientist, the president of the Center for Security Programs.
In his previous political career Erlan Karin was the first deputy chairman of the "Asar" party, the head of the Department of Internal Policy at the Executive Office of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Secretary of the People's Democratic Party of "Nur Otan", as well as the political adviser to the akim of Mangistau Oblast. Dr. Karin has authored/coauthored several books on Central Asia and political transition in Kazakhstan and holds a Ph.D. in political science.
Dr. Karin will discuss the emergence and development of terrorist groups within Kazakhstan and how the terrorist threat has changed over the past two decades. Talking about his upcoming book called"Soldiers of the Caliphate: Myths and Reality", he will also put the threat Kazakhstan faces in a comparative context with its neighbors in Central Asia.

We will be talking about different opportunities around the world where you can apply including conferences, competitions, graduate school, short-term programs and etc. The guest of the meeting will be Almira Zakiyeva. She will provide a workshop on “How to Write a Statement of Purpose”.
About the trainer:
Almira Zakiyeva works for the Chamber of Entrepreneurs in Astana. She earned her MA degree in Regional Studies at Harvard University through the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program. She received her BA degree in Political science and International relations from KIMEP.
About the meeting:
- We will be congratulating the winners who correctly predicted the Scottish referendum results;
- We will have a small introductory session followed by a training session with Almira.

Meeting with Dr. Schweber

We have a chance to meet with Professor Howard Schweber.
He is a famous political science professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison. He had served as a Vice-Provost of Nazarbayev University as well as a Professor at SHSS.
His area of interest is mainly focused on constitutional law and legal and political theory. He received numerous prestigious awards for teaching. In 2012 he was the Australian Fulbright Distinguished Chair in American Politics. Also, he is writing blogs for Huffington Post and other sites.
